Call it a cliché, but different

William Golding – Lord of the Flies
By Julia Andriesse V5H

You have probably heard of ‘Lord of the Flies’. Perhaps you have seen the film or read the book. What most people don’t know, is that it has not always been such a great success. The book was published in 1954 and it took one year before people started to appreciate it. It was one of William Golding’s first books. ‘Lord of the Flies’ was also his well known and best book. He got a Nobel Prize in Literature for this novel. It is quite understandable that people could not equally appreciate the book. At that time people were recovering from the second World War, when they were seized by the throat by William Golding’s novel. It’s a novel with several elements of war in it. Elements like rival parties, power, good and evil and death.

‘Lord of the Flies’ tells a story of a group of primary school boys which are no older than 13 years. Their plane, which was about to go on a trip, crashes on a island. The boys are the only survivors and have to survive till they’re rescued. The clever leader figure Ralph soon comes with plans how to survive, but the headstrong Jack has a different view. There arise two groups, which try to survive in their own way. The kind of pathetic and fat boy which nickname is Piggy, is the most loyal supporter of Ralph. The urge to survive brings out the worst in the boys. They become predators and start to lose their values. It’s a battle how to survive.

‘Lord of the Flies’ can almost be read by everyone, which makes it a good book. It is easy to follow and understand, even for people who find reading difficult. The used language is quite easy and if it’s not entirely clear, William Golding makes it most of the time clearer by an additional description. It also includes clear but above typical characters. The born leader Ralph, the pathetic fat guy Piggy and of course the cruel character Jack Merridew. A real man’s world, you might say. In this world it’s all about the power and urge to survive.

The disappointment is that William Golding has made use of an omniscient narrator. From the moment I started reading, I found it disappointing that the book wasn’t written from a boys’ view. When I looked at the back of the book, I hoped it was written from a childs’ perspective. Broadly, it is a cliché to call. An airplane crashes and some survivors end up on a deserted island where they have to survive till they are rescued. On the other hand, it has not the expected end you thought it would have. Mr. Golding shows the true nature of human beings, whatever cruel. But despite the disappointments, William Golding succeeded at the point of making an adventurous book. He used his war experiences, which made it even more shocking at some points. From cover to cover, the reader feels pity for the boys.

Winston and Julia : The new Romeo and Juliette

Winston and Julia : The new Romeo and Juliette

The Forced Repression of Natural Impulses in 1984
By Julia Andriesse V5H

Why is love so important for us? Because we can’t live without the feeling someone cares about us? Because it makes life tolerable? Because it makes us smile? We all live for love, that’s certain. We can’t live without it. There’s no one who loves nothing. The evidence? If I say you have to take the word ‘love’ in mind. You can’t think of something nor someone you love. That’s exactly the part of Nineteeneighty-four I’m going to write about.

George Orwell made me change my mind. From now on I’ll think of the book each time I feel lonely. Because, we -humans of the 21st century- aren’t single-handed. Even when the most important people in your life die, you won’t be alone. There will always be people with the same thoughts. Thoughts that you perhaps aren’t allowed to have. Winston(the main character of the book) finds a partner with the same opinion. Her name is Julia. Together, they search for all sorts of information against the Party.

The Party(Oceania society/the group under Big Brother) doesn’t want people to love. They are allowed to marry, but only if there’s no sexual appeal. The reason that the Party don’t want it’s members to love is not only because people will pay less attention to the Party. But also because they are using up energy when they make love. The energy which you have to put in the Party. Afterwards, you feel happy and don’t give a damn for anything. This attitude can lead to contradiction and contradiction can lead to revolution. That’s why the Party must prevent that people fall in love.

The Party has blocked every way that can lead to love. They have thought of every little detail. Women aren’t allowed to wear cosmetics, because fuller lips and bigger eyes can exhort arousal. Even a lot of food is forbidden. Chocolate is one of the most dangerous sweets for the Party. Why? Because there’s ‘phenylethylamine’ in it. This makes people happy. And, as you know, happiness can lead to contradiction.

This ban on love is frightful, but the consequences are equally bad. One of those is greed. In one of Winston’s dreams, he goes back to his childhood. Winston’s father disappeared when he was young. There was never enough to eat. He, his mother and his ill sister often fought over food. His mother was always ready to give him the biggest portion, but no matter how much she gave him, he would demand more. From this I can gather that there’s no love for his mother. Winston is greedy and can’t help it: no one taught him how to love. Not only greed is a problem. People will also lose reality and become stupid. They can’t think for themselves anymore. Life without love has not only consequences for individualists, but also for the society.

Without love, no health.
Without health, no strength.
Without strength, no society.

Without love, no sex.
Without sex,
no children.
Without children, no society.

 Love is all we need.
